The Air-volution of La Glisse
What if humans were meant to fly? It's an ancient desire to soar through the air like a bird. Tacking back and forth across horizons or climbing up and down mountains, gravity always confines us to the planet's surface, limiting us to move in only two of the three dimensions, along the X & Y axes. Until now...
(X,Y) +Z? Perret teaser
As a young surfer in the 70s i dreamed about shooting surfing and skiing films.
Following these passions became a way of life, taking me from the Australian east coast to the Swiss Alps and all around the world.
Based in Verbier, Switzerland from 1981 to 2001 i found myself filming athletes that were pushing the limits along the cutting edge of performance and innovation in the "sports de glisse" communities, sports in which we slide, using the force of gravity. Skiing, snowboarding down mountains, surfing waves, skateboarding concrete, paragliding through the air itself.
XYZ follows this cinematic journey showing the changing fortunes of skiing, the emergence of snowboarding and paragliding and the invention of crossover sport, flowriding.
Consistent among all the athletes is their increasing ability to fly through the air, breaking out from the confines of the two dimensions (X & Y) that we have been confined to throughout human history, into the Z axis, the third dimension, the void.
